Malaga Museums Offer Free Entry This Sunday

A number of museums in Malaga are welcoming visitors in free of charge this Sunday as part of World Tourism Day.

The Picasso, Thyssen, Russian and Pompidou museums are among 26 cultural institutions in the city offering free admission on Sunday, 27th September. Other popular attractions such as La Concepción botanical gardens, La Araña archaeological site and the Gerald Brenan house are taking part in the campaign.

This year’s theme for World Tourism Day is “Tourism and Rural Development” and is important due to the hit the industry has taken as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A statement on their website said, “This year’s international day of observation comes at a critical moment, as countries around the world look to tourism to drive recovery, including in rural communities where the sector is a leading employer and economic pillar.”

The day is a global recognition of the tourism industry and hopes to highlight its importance. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “For rural communities, indigenous peoples and many other historically marginalized populations, tourism has been a vehicle for integration, empowerment and generating income.”

The museums taking part include Fundación Picasso-Casa Natal, Museo Picasso Málaga, Centre Pompidou Málaga, Museo de Málaga, Colección del Museo Ruso de San Petersburgo, Museo Carmen Thyssen, Museo del Patrimonio Municipal, Museo Catedralicio, Museo Revello de Toro, CAC Málaga Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, CAC Málaga La Coracha, Museo Nacional de Aeropuertos y Transporte Aéreo, Principia science centre, Ecomuseo Lagar de Torrijos and Museo de Arte Flamenco Peña Juan Breva.

Other attractions offering free admission include Castillo de Gibralfaro, Alcazaba, Expiración and Estudiantes brotherhood museusm, Roman Theatre, La Concepción botanical-historical garden, La Araña archaeological sites, Gerald Brenan house, Museo de la Imaginación and Ecomuseo Astilleros Nereo.
